Prevention of iron deficiency anaemia in children under 5 years of age.

IDA PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Measures @ of delivery:

  • Delay umbilical cord clamping for at least 3 minutes.
  • Breastfeeding
    1. Initiation of breastfeed within 1 hour.
    2. Encourage breastfeeding & add supplemental iron at 4 mo of age
    3. If not breastfed, encourage iron fortified formula milk (12mg/ml)
    4. Limit cow milk to <20-24oz/day after 1 yr age prevents blood loss by cow milk induced enteropathy. 

Prophylactic Iron and Folic Acid supplementation

  • 6–59mo - Biweekly 1ml syrup (20 mg elemental Iron + 100 mcg of Folic Acid)

Deworming

  • 12-24mo - Bi-annual 200mg albendazole
  • 24-59mo - Bi-annual 400mg albendazole

  • RSBK team: AWC/school 
  • Medical Officer: health facility

At

  • RBSK/ANM: as per scheduled microplan
  • MO: opportunistic

BEHAVIOUR CHANGE COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN

  1. Compliance to Iron Folic Acid supplements and deworming
  2. Appropriate Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) with emphasis on adequate and age-appropriate complementary foods for children 6 months and above
  3. Increase intake of iron-rich, protein-rich and vitamin C-rich foods through dietary diversification and food fortification.
